Sixth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition: Divisions

The Sixth Canadian Chopin Piano Competition will take place January 9-14, 2025 at the Telus Center For Performance and Learning (The Royal Conservatory).


The Competition will include three divisions: Junior (born between 2012-2016), Intermediate (born between 2007 and 2011) Senior (born between 1995 and 2009).


To encourage and facilitate broad participation, a Virtual Preliminary Round will be held for all three divisions. As part of their application, all competitors will submit a video which will be used for initial screening and will also serve as the Preliminary Round performance. 


The Junior and Intermediate divisions will consist of Virtual Preliminary Rounds, in-person Semi Final and Final Rounds.  


The Senior division will consist of a Virtual Preliminary Round, and in-person Quarter Final, Semi Final and Final Rounds. 

JUNIOR DIVISION



Eligibility 

  • pianists born between 2012 and 2016

  • open to Canadian citizens or   permanent residents

 Repertoire Requirements: 

  • any solo works by Chopin

  • time limit – 12 minutes

Application Fee:

  • $200

INTERMEDIATE DIVISION



Eligibility 

  • pianists born between 2007 and 2011

  • open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents

Repertoire Requirements: 

  • one etude, one nocturne, one solo additional work by Chopin

  • time limit – 22 minutes

Application Fee:

  • $300

SENIOR DIVISION



Eligibility 

  • pianists born between 1995 and 2009 

  • open to Canadian citizens; Canadian birth certificate or Canadian passport required with application

Application and Preliminary  Round Repertoire Requirements: 

  • two etudes, one nocturne, one mazurka, one additional work by Chopin

  • time limit – 30 minutes

* Additional repertoire required   for in-person to be confirmed


Application Fee:

  • $400

Note that pianists born in 2007, 2008, and 2009 may enter either the Intermediate or the Senior Division. 

COMPETITION TIMELINE

  • Applications open: May 1, 2024

  • Application deadline: September 15, 2024

  • Screening of applicants: September 15 - Oct 1, 2024

  • Virtual Preliminary Round: October 17 - 25, 2024

  • Results of Virtual Preliminary Round: October 25, 2024

  • In-Person Competition (Toronto): January 9-14 2025
